This article outlines the important aspects of the advanced undergraduate laboratory in the physics curriculum. These laboratory experiences have many roles for exciting students about physics and teaching them some of the tools used in modern research. The author, a former President of the AAPT, asks important questions about the future of advanced laboratories and the means to support these courses.
