Abstract Title: |
Pop-Up Classes: a non-traditional way to introduce technical skills |
Abstract: |
Pop-up classes are quick, extra-curricular, "off the books" classes offered on an occasional basis. They provide an easy way to introduce some material; either things that are not accepted as part of the normal physics curriculum, or new things that an instructor just wants to try out. Many technical proficiencies do not easily fit into the canon of standard physics courses. We have found that pop-ups that introduce technical lab techniques are extremely popular with students and get them immediately involved with hands-on skills. However, pop-ups have some distinct problems. Both the benefits and the drawbacks of using pop-ups will be discussed. |
