Abstract Title: W25: Soap Films: optics and colloidal interactions
Abstract: Participants will make qualitative observations of soap film shapes and colors produced by thin-film interference, including the condition known as a black film.  Relatively inexpensive and simple to construct equipment will then be used to make reflectivity measurements of laser light off the surface of a film in a controlled environment.  These measurements will be used to find the thickness of the film during the black film condition.  Interference fringes can be used to evaluate the change in thickness profile of the film as it drains.  An upper limit on the length of soap molecules is made.
