Abstract Title: W50: Radio-Frequency Spectroscopy by Optical Pumping
Abstract: This experiment uses TeachSpin's Optical Pumping apparatus to illustrate one method for performing spectroscopy among the ground-state sublevels of an atom.  It illustrates the new issues that arise  in doing spectroscopy among energy levels that are equally populated in equilibrium, and uses a clever optical method for establishing non-equilibrium populations in ground-state sub-levels.  It further uses the absorption of light, rather than of radio-frequency energy, to detect the transitions.  The Zeeman effect, of magnetic fields on the levels' energy, can be detected with remarkable precision.
