Abstract Title: W47: Magnetic Susceptibility and the Periodic Table
Abstract: This experiment uses TeachSpin's 'FMS' or Foundational Magnetic Susceptibility apparatus to measure the magnetic susceptibility, c, of materials.  It measures, by mere weighing, an observable interaction between a permanent magnet and samples ordinarily considered non-magnetic, and it clearly establishes the distinction between diamagnetic and paramagnetic materials.  For simple Curie paramagnets, it connects the measured paramagnetic susceptibility to the number of unpaired electron spins per molecule, making direct connection to the orbital-filling designation so routinely printed on periodic tables, but so rarely confirmed by students' direct experience.
