Abstract Title: W52: Earth’s-Field NMR and the Proton Magnetic Moment
Abstract: This experiment uses TeachSpin's 'EF-NMR' or Earth's-Field Nuclear Magnetic Resonance apparatus to observe the 'free induction decay' due to the precession of protons, in a water sample, in the earth's magnetic field.  It demonstrates the need to 'polarize' or pre-magnetize the water, and the timing requirements during the polarization and the precession phases of the experiment.  It measures the (audible!) precession frequency to Hz-level accuracy, and it detects how that precession frequency varies with absolutely-known increments of added magnetic field.  The result is the proton gyromagnetic ratio, the ratio of its magnetic moment to its angular momentum ?/2.
