Abstract Title: |
W48: The Hall Effect and the Sign of Charge Carriers |
Abstract: |
This experiment uses TeachSpin's 'RTHE' or Room-Temperature Hall Effect apparatus to illustrate, concretely, the Hall effect in both semiconductor and copper samples. It emphasizes the fundamental requirements needed to establish both the sign, and the number density, of charge carriers in a conductive material. It allows students to measure, easily, the Hall potentials in p- and n-type semiconductors, and (with more difficulty) the vastly smaller Hall potentials arising in copper samples. It unambiguously distinguishes p- and n-type materials, and from first principles establishes that the charge carriers in copper are negative. |
