Abstract Title: Muon Experiments, Beyond the Turnkey
Abstract: Muon experiments are among the simplest and most direct means of making contact with topics in high energy physics. The muon lifetime experiment, for example, has been a staple of the advanced lab for decades. Muon counting experiments, in general, have enjoyed renewed attention in recent years, in part due to new detector designs that replace conventional photomultiplier tubes with solid state silicon photomultipliers.  Indeed, there has been as much attention to the construction of these detectors as to the physics experiments they make possible. It can be argued, however, that the more turnkey these experiments are, the less pedagogical value they contain.  This poster will describe attempts to add open ended activities to the design of the detectors, and data acquisition and simulation to the implementation of coincidence counting experiments.  Early results will be described.
