Abstract Title: |
A new photon lab: Mimicking Eve in quantum key distribution |
Abstract: |
We have set up a table-top demonstration of quantum key distribution (QKD) with entangled photon pairs. Alice and Bob have two detectors each separated by polarization. In QKD, Eve intercepts the photon going toward Bob measuring it and resending a photon in the same state as she measured. That way, if Eve measures in a polarization basis that is not the same as Bob's, it will generate errors in the joint detection of Alice and Bob when they use the same basis. It is hard to detect and then resent a single photon. We mimic Eve's action by using optical elements that disturb (or not) the photon going towards Bob. This is done without absorption and re-emission of Bob's photon. |
