Abstract Title: Building a Low-Cost Earth’s Field Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometer in the Advanced Lab
Abstract: Pulsed nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is commonly used in the advanced lab. However, commercial instruments typically cost thousands of dollars. Using a published design (C. A. Michal, Meas. Sci. Technol. 21, 105902 (2010)), the students in our Experimental Physics course built an Earth's field NMR spectrometer during the last six weeks of the semester. Everything required for the spectrometer's operation costs only a few hundred dollars in total, excluding the computer, and the students only used a lathe and some handheld tools to assemble it. Imaging/gradient capabilities are a possible addition for future students. I will give an overview of the design and construction of the spectrometer as well as examples of its performance.
