Abstract Title: Polarization studies of 3D photonic crystals using transmission and reflection experiments
Abstract: We present a polarization study of 3D photonic crystals suitable for an advanced physics laboratory or senior project. The crystals are grown using the vertical deposition method where microspheres of diameters 200 nm, 220 nm, 370 nm, and 430 nm self-assemble into a face-centered cubic structure. A pseudo-bandgap develops in the [111] crystallographic direction which we probe using polarized light in both transmission and reflection geometries as a function of incident angle. The effective refractive indices of the photonic crystals derived from data using the Bragg-Snell law and a new approach based on the overlap of primary and secondary reflection peaks are found be in good agreement. The experiments involved are cost effective and straightforward to perform and has the added benefit of teaching students about crystal diffraction.
