Abstract Title: |
Using Arduinos for Interdisciplinary Student Projects |
Abstract: |
Microcontrollers such as the Arduino are growing in popularity due to their low cost and ease of use. In recent years, the physics and chemistry departments at Lynchburg have developed a strong synergy through student projects involving the design and construction of instruments for use in lab courses or student research projects. A few example projects will be presented including a syringe pump chemical dispenser, an automated vertical chromatography instrument, and a rotating sample stage. Future planned projects include a gas phase photocatalysis reactor and a visible spectrometer. These projects give physics majors hands-on experience with instrument design while providing chemistry majors with additional analytical tools. The advantages and disadvantages of Arduino-controlled instruments will be discussed. |
