Abstract Title: W27: Flexible resources for supporting student conceptual understanding of diode circuits in electronics courses*
Abstract: Electronics courses in physics typically have many learning goals, from modeling the behavior of individual circuit elements to building familiarity with common sub-circuits that may be combined in order to create more complex systems for a variety of practical applications.  At the same time, research has shown that students often struggle with basic circuits concepts and fail to develop the kind of robust conceptual understanding of analog electronics that supports effective and efficient design, assembly, and testing.  To this end, we have been working to create supplemental materials that can be flexibly incorporated into existing electronics courses in a variety of instructional settings (laboratory, lecture, and recitation) in order to better support student conceptual understanding.  These research-based materials, which have been developed for a variety of topics in electronics, include in-class tutorials, small-group activities, formative assessment questions, and targeted laboratory exercises.

In this workshop, participants will gain first-hand experience with our materials on diode circuits.  We will illustrate how we are using these materials to provide a coherent, integrated instructional environment capable of supporting multiple learning goals (including, for example, circuit design).  If time permits, we will also discuss how these materials might be incorporated into electronics courses that differ substantively from the one at the University of Maine.
