Abstract Title: W12: X-Ray Fluorescence & Moseley's Law
Abstract: X-ray fluorescence (XRF) is excited using an array of a dozen low activity radioactive sources salvaged from discarded smoke detectors.  The characteristic x-ray emissions are measured and analyzed with a commercially available multichannel CdTe detector.  Aspects of pulse processing, including rise time discrimination, are explored.  The detector is calibrated using gamma rays from exempt check sources.  Moseley's Law is investigated using the K x-rays of a selection of elemental metal foils.  Deviations for heavier elements can be described quantitatively as effects of special relativity.  Supplementary activities include elemental analysis of simple materials (e.g. solder, bronze, coinage metals), radioactive daughter identification, and x-ray mass attenuation coefficient measurements.
