Abstract Title: |
Developing a Laboratory Practice Assessment for the Design, Analysis, Tools, and Apprenticeship (DATA) Laboratory |
Abstract: |
With the development of the AAPT Recommendations for the Undergraduate Physics Laboratory Curriculum, the physics education research community has turned much of their attention toward the undergraduate laboratory environment. Recently, Michigan State University transformed its algebra-based introductory physics lab curriculum to emphasize the development of experimental skills and laboratory practices. Students in the Design, Analysis, Tools, and Apprenticeship (DATA) Lab engage in the exploration of physical systems to increase their understanding of data analysis, model development, measurement uncertainty, and scientific communication. We will discuss our most recent efforts on the development of formal structures that support the transformed physics laboratory, specifically, the progress made toward the assessment tools intended to measure student learning of laboratory practice within DATA Lab. |
