Abstract Title: Instructors’ values and practices are integral to PER in labs
Abstract: ALPhA has been supporting community and professional development for lab instructors since 2007. In the meantime, there has been increasing attention to instructional lab environments in the Physics Education Research (PER) community. These trends paint a promising future for collaborations between lab instructors and education researchers. In this presentation, I will describe four principles that I try to follow when collaborating with instructors during my PER projects: value the ideas and expertise of instructors and researchers; cultivate mutual trust between instructors and researchers; create new knowledge that may validate or challenge commonly held beliefs about labs; and work toward "win-win-win" scenarios in which students, instructors, and researchers all benefit. Throughout the presentation, I will contextualize these principles with examples from two collaborative projects: a multi-year investigation of students' project ownership in an optics lab, and a multi-institution investigation of effective teaching practices in upper-division labs at five universities.
