Abstract Title: Hyperfine Structure in Rubidium
Abstract: A TeachSpin Diode Laser Spectroscopy apparatus was used to study the hyperfine structure of Rubidium. An external cavity diode laser was used to provide a very narrow range of laser wavelengths near 780 nm in order to study the hyperfine structure of Rubidium (Rb). The absorption spectrum of Rb was measured, but it was subject to Doppler-broadening of the spectral lines. A technique known as Saturated Absorption Spectroscopy was used to eliminate the effects of Doppler-broadening and to obtain a higher resolution spectrum of Rb. The setup, performance, and operation of the system will be described.
