Videos in the Intermediate Laboratories |
Abstract: |
Many instructors see how videos can be used to "flip" portions of a traditional lecture, but they can also be used to benefit intermediate laboratory classes. I utilize videos in Modern Physics Lab (PHY210) and Practical Electronics (PHY240). The videos in PHY210 replace in-class explanations of the apparatus, which students use outside of class time. This has led to greater student independence, with students frequently referring to the video during completion of the lab. In PHY240, students create short YouTube tutorials on electronics topics of their choice. This helps teach digital literacy and communications skills. All of these videos are publicly viewable, some with thousands of views, serving as resources for students and instructors at other institutions and diversifying the voices of who teaches physics. |
