Abstract Title: W32 - Torsional Oscillator, Noise, and a Spectrum Analyzer – What can Fourier Analysis reveal when you drive the system with noise?
Abstract: The simple harmonic oscillator is perhaps the most generally useful model system in all of physics, and TeachSpin's Torsional Oscillator is a great way to learn and teach all of its properties.  An exciting and impressive extension uses noise to drive the oscillator and an SRS Spectrum Analyzer to explore the power of Fourier thinking to analyze the result.

Participants will:
• See the parts, and chart the outputs, of the Oscillator
• Hand-excite the Oscillator, to see the damped waveform
• Drive the system with noise and interpret the output in both time and frequency space (via an oscilloscope and the SRS Spectrum Analyzer)
