Abstract Title: Photon Labs to Teach Quantum Mechanics
Abstract: For the last 16 years, we have been offering a laboratory section for our upper-level course on quantum mechanics. The lab is based on table-top single-photon quantum optics experiments. We have developed a number of experiments based on this platform. The development stage was done by undergraduates mostly as part of their capstone research project. Recent additions to the suite of labs include Hong-Ou-Mandel interference and double-slit interference. Covid led us to motorize the moving optical components and add a remote-operation option. The format of our lab offering has evolved much over the years, becoming less of an optics lab and more about doing experiments to understand/verify quantum mechanics. Recently we have used the motorized aspect to offer asynchronous labs.
