Abstract Title: Bridging the disconnect between the classroom lab and the research lab
Abstract: If you ask an undergraduate at my institution, did your physics lab courses prepare you for work in a research lab, the answer is a resounding no. What is the disconnect? Why can't we train students for research science? I recently taught a sophomore/junior level laboratory to three of my research students and saw first hand that my efforts in the classroom lab did not translate. One issue is that the nature of the science that we do in the classroom laboratory is fundamentally different from the nature of the science in the research lab. Here, I will describe these fundamental differences--which surround steps for i) how to start a lab project, ii) how to take data, iii) how to collaborate with other scientists, and iv) how to communicate data. I will also discuss some updates to the course that have had varying success.
